How can a Teacher be a Teaching Aid ......By :-.Sh. Sudershan Punia , Lecturer Govt. Model Sanskriti Sr. Sec. School, Ladain ( Jhajjar)
How can a Teacher be a Teaching Aid Although we have a lot of teaching aids today. We try to use new techniques in our teaching i.e. project based learning, use of I C T in class , Smart Class Rooms, Audio Visual Aids. But according to me one aid that is more convenient, uses no electricity, can be used effectively in each and every school, yes that is teacher him or herself. A teacher can involve students more in class room activities and discussion if follows some simple steps:-
1 Movement:-
Enough space to move back and front to check their work. Just sitting on chair or standing at one place creates distance between teacher and taught. Step forward to emphases a point. Take small steps to different sides of the class. Some movements are necessary to focus the students on you so that they feel that teacher is taking a genuine interest in what he is teaching. If students see that teacher is taking interest in teaching, they will surely be interested in learning.
2.Use body language and Gestures:-
Hold your body in such a way that you look alert and awake. Too less movements is boring and too much are distracting. Arms and hands are very expressive visual aids They can be used to describe shapes action movements etc. But keep still while listening to a student habits such as fiddling with note books , books playing with pen chalk can be both distracting and irritating to the students
3 Eye contact:-
Keep eyes lively aware and interested. Move them round to take in everything. Fix them on specific students but not for so long that they may become uncomfortable. It keeps the students alert, Give the teacher feedback on impact on the students of what he is saying.
An effective teacher can control the class by the expression of his eyes. Make sure that you are making contact to each students. It seems that you are talking to him individually.
4 Facial expressions:-
Constant frown discourage students from asking questions, feeling free to discuss a problem and come for help. A smile can work wonder
It encourages the students to participate more effectively and actively. They look interested while a teacher is speaking.
A smile, a grimace, a curl of the lips raised eye-brows etc. send message as needed.
5.Speech:-
Have you ever heard yourself speak ? Do you know what your voice sounds like to others. A low or high –pitched tone is difficult to understand. Does your voice send the children to sleep or running for
earplugs? Try taping your voice-listen to yourself. Where are you slipping? Make your own personal checklist;- Are you speaking at the right volume? Does the end of your sentence fall so slow that students sitting at the back cannot hear? Are you hemming too much? Are you speaking too fast?
6 Students talk:-
Students should be given ample time to talk and discuss on the topic that was taught by the teacher. Teacher should give some questions and ask students to answer those questions after discussion.
It breaks the monotony. Make small jokes. Be friendly.
7. Names:-
Call the students by names. It sounds warmer and friendlier and lessens the distance between the teacher and the learner. When a teacher calls a student by his or her name, that student feels proud and develops attachment with the teacher also. Avoid calling by nick names or other titles like “Lambe Baalo Wala, Chasme Wala” etc.
In fact the teacher can be the best teaching aid if he or she follow the simple rules mentioned above. Be sure you are using yourself to the full effect for the benefits of your students.
